Antartica Space Station

Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2016 Entry: Image credit and copyright: Richard Inman

The Halley 6 Research Station, located on the Brunt Ice Shelf in Antartica, is an European Space Agency (ESA) facility. The environment is considered a short second to the conditions in space. The futuristic appearance of the base, combined with the frozen tundra and the aurora on the left of the photograph, could easily represent an image of a theoretical human colony on another planet within our solar system.
